A picture of my dog this afternoon... Comments welcome. This was with my Kit Lens in manual mode.

Also could anyone help me I want to buy a new lens that I can take really good portraits with. I dont want to spend more than $300. Is there a all around lens that will work for this and something with a pretty good zoom? I just see some great pictures on here and I want that quality. I am a newbie and still learning that this is an expensive hobby but I really want to upgrade my glass SOON!! Thanks in advance to anyone that replies...

You wont in this thread. Its only self-congratulations and snapshots area.

I think that's hardly fair. People are proud of their gear, and in many cases excited to own it, so they talk about it on a forum. No harm done, IMO. And if you call some of the fantastic work that has appeared in this thread "snapshots", I question your ability to render a thoughtful criticism of any image.

Hey
Not aiming anyone in particular, this just seemed like a cool place to share pictures when I first joined, but after a while it looks like flickr and deviantart.
People just post what they shot during the day, and get comments.

You posted twelve images in a row. Hardly the recipe for comments, in my experience. It also violates the image posting rules of POTN, but that isn't the point.

Kidmat wrote in post #8533217 (external link)
Dont get me wrong, welcomes are warm.
Pictures that are post-processed to hell, photoshopped to the bone usually get the best critics "great capture thats so cute added to fav A++++" and other ***. No offense.
Ive posted some sets that I was quite proud of (composition, exposure, etc) and go 0 replies. Bah.

You said yourself, with your recent images, that you were "dumping random recent photos". Hardly lets us know that these are carefully composed, metered and post-processed works from the very depths of your creative soul.

I agree about flickr; often it's over-processed, cross-processed stuff that gets the most comments (which is why there's a few in my stream ;) ), but getting flickr comments isn't about the skill of the photographer, for the most part. The people getting tons of comments belong to lots of groups, and submit their images for comments, which are required by the group. In short, if you want flickr comments, you have to seek them. No one will just stumble on your images amongst the billions of images on the site.

Deviant Art I have zero experience with, but it's probably similar. Advertising your images lets people see them, and thus comment.

Must mean I have to improve, LOL!

We all need to improve, IMO. I've found maybe three amateurs who really should be working professionally; the rest of us (I'm not including you, because I haven't seen enough of your work) should remain amateurs, and enjoy the craft, and the art. I've been paid for my hobby, but I don't consider myself a professional by any measure.

#1 is a great shot. I noticed the ISO is set at 800... may have been able to get away with 200 or 400 with that light.

#2 is very clean...especially using an ISO setting of 1600! Great job

Since I'm learning my camera still, I've been playing with settings...I don't remember the settings for each photo...also they've all been corrected slightly with PS Elements 5...mainly just cropping the photos and doing minor enhancements...auto adjust pretty much. If I'm supposed to only upload untouched photos, let me know and I can upload those instead.

Anyway, here are a few pics:

I'm new to dSLR's, but not film SLR's. Just a bit rusty.

you don't have to make it more expensive!
some people get good results using the kit lens and an external (off camera) flash for portraits, others prefer the sharper "nifty fifty" (50mm 1.8) or 85mm lens with flash. Another person recently posted good portrait photos in this thread using the 55-250IS lens

you're allowed to post process your photos! In fact it's best to shoot in RAW and afterwords adjust for color, levels, cropping, etc.

Welcome to all new peeps again !
Love the mood of that first shot ottor!
And your pic of the lighthouse is a goooooood shot daaaaaan ;-)a (sorry I couldn't resist)
btw MikeMaciazka the exif data of your pictures is still intact, so if you download a reader for that you yourself can see it too, you can find for example a plug in for firefox that lets you read exif on right-click, comes in very handy!
