Cool, thankyou. Were you implying there's a better prime lens to go for? What other prime lens might i consider in its place?

For the price, there's not really any other options.

There are many many prime options though. The next step up, image quality-wise, would probably be the Canon 50mm f/1.4. If you wanted something a bit longer, there's the Canon 85mm f/1.8. If you wanted something a bit wider, there's the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Lot's of other options though, including the whole range of Canon "L" primes and lenses from Sigma, Zeiss, etc, and adapted manual focus lenses.

It depends what kind of budget you have, how much you think you'd use it, and what kind of shooting you do. The Canon 50mm f/1.8 (based on what I've read, not first hand experience) is a good value and delivers decent photos given the price. If you haven't had exposure to shooting with prime lenses, it might be a good way to "dip your toe in the water" to see how you like it.

Awesome...a must have accessory in my book as well!

charliec hit it right on the nose. IMHO, you can't go wrong with this lens as the cost is so low, but it really gives you an idea of what is possible with a high aperture ("fast") lens. You may outgrow the build quality, but the experience and knowledge you gain from using it is well worth it. Highly recommended in my book, especially if you're looking for a first lens and don't have much experience.

And the shots you can produce from it are amazing...some of mine with the 50mm f/1.8:

I keep forgetting the 50mm 1.8 can do more than low light - it's also a sharp lens!

love my xsi and 50 1.8. It's my main setup for shooting senior portraits.

thanks!

all my senior pictures are done for this year, but I'm starting to schedule for next year already. Those were done with ambient lighting, but I hope to do some flash work next spring.
