Lithium Ion batteries for flashes........

I don't quite understand why it is not possible to buy a Li-ion battery for a flash battery pack like the CP-E4, not even a mod yet.

would this have better recycle speed than NiMH in the CP-E4, or maybe even a Quantum turbo?

That should work, I think most of the typical lithium ion batteries are 3.6 volt cells so that'd get you 7.2 volts which might be too much.. but these are 6.6... innerestin.....

...I've been thinking about building an external battery pack using sub-c nimh batteries... I'm going to use 5 so I get 6 volts instead of 4.8 from using the 4 inernal AA's so that extra voltage should help with the recycle times...

If you can get voltage between 8-9 volt ....yes it will work . But if you look at the amp rating ,you need around 3-3.5 amp draw to operating the system longer period .

The importance is voltage 8-9 and then amp 3-3.5 amp .I found some SLA about 8 Volt and 3.2 amp to work with CP-E4 .

Main thing I want is :
-Low cost ( SLA is the cheapest in the market)
-Reliable (most of SLA is last longer than Nimh or Lithium)

how about 4.6Ah and max draw of about 138A

ah is amp hours, it's a measure of capacity, and it's not important in calculations except to say how long it'll last between charges. All SLA bats will give you more current than you can use. Just make sure to get the voltage right.

My friend he didn't test that high amp 4.6amp yet so I can't tell you about that , what he told me is : 8-9 volt and 3-4 amp max.
For what I understand is Li (lithium) is better than Ni (nicad) and more expensive too,but it give better:
-Amp
-Stay cooler than Ni when the current draw
-less weight

In the future I will try both Lithium and SLA and see which one last longer and more reliable .
