If the high cost of Gitzo scares you off, take a look at the Feisol lineup. I have the CT-3442 with the Markins Q3 head and use it when I need to travel light with lenses upto 300mm f4. The CT-3442 is extemely light, compact yet very stable. Has not let me down and I use it for day hiking and used it 10 days in norther Arizona without any problems.

I will second the CT-3442. Folds nicely, strong support, very light and it is fairly affordable. I have it paired with a Manfrotto 488RC4 and love it.
