I have been looking at printers for a while and can never decide which would be the best one to get.

I'm looking for something suitable for a semi-professional photographer, for producing high quality prints to sell in limited numbers. I would like to do black & white as well as colour, so monochrome reproduction must be up to a high standard.

Up to A3 print size would be preferable, and another important consideration is that it wouldn't cost a fortune to run (ink consumption).

I quite like the look of the Epson R1800, but it isn't cheap (at least not for me! ), so if you have any other recommendations I would be pleased to hear them.

Thanks for reading,

Mike

OK, I'm not going to answer your question, but propose an alternative.

Back story; I printed, framed, and sold my prints for about 5 years. Lots of expense with printers, ink, paper, monitor calibration, etc. etc. and it took a lot of valuable time away from my photography.

Then I found a local guy with an Epson 9800 who can print up to 40" (maybe 44") in any length and can also do custom matting and framing if needed. He also does exceptional monochromes on the 9800.

Long story short; I get better prints, with none of the hassle. He provides his paper profiles for soft proofing. I send him files via FTP and pick them up the next day. If there are any problems, he reprints as his expense.

My life is so much better now that I don't have a printer attached to my computer.

Just a thought.

Thanks Hommedars. :-)

One of my friends works in digital print and he has a Xerox iGen3, so I suppose I have that option. I was thinking of something I could use at home, but maybe getting them printed professionally is worth looking into.

I use the R1800 and like it a lot. I am still making adjustments though in trying to get results printed that look like what I am seeing on the monitor. Not the printers fault ...I just need more edjumicating. ;)

That's one of my main concerns with getting photographs printed elsewhere. Even if getting photographs printed professionally I can see that a home printer would be a good idea for its flexibility in that respect.

From what I have heard and seen, the R2400 is the bad boy for black and whites.

I love mine to pieces.
