Which filter do you use on your lens? UV, Haze or Both?

Just wondering, I usually use a UV filter just as a protection device for my lenses, so they're on there 99% of them time, unless I'm shooting something inside.

Now I have been experimenting with stacking cir-pol/IR filters recently and I really liked the outcome, does anyone else stack filters on a normal basis? UV and Haze perhaps?

Just wondering...

I never use a filter unless absolutely needed.

In bad conditions, I will use a UV filter for lens protection.

Other than that, a circular polarizer as needed, but I don't stack them.

I don't stack filters. I use protection filters (not uv, but clear ones) or CP as needed.

I only use a filter when needed - CPL or UV - never stacked!

I use a UV filter simply for the physical protection of my lens. Also with my 17-40mm f/4 the only place you can see physical outside movement were dust can get in is now under the filter.

Same here. Except I don't use an UV.

My 20D came with a Hoya UV filter and I haven't figured out how to get it off. I've been thinking about getting a circular polarizer. is it really bad to stack the two together?

I use good UV filters when I need them to protect a lens against bad conditions, otherwise I generally avoid using anything.

I honestly never use a filter to protect my lens. I have hoods for most of my glass but unless I need my ND or GND there is no filter on my glass.

I never, Not once claimed to read your post...

I only use a filter for a desired effect. NEVER for protection.

I use a filter to protect my lens because I shoot off-road racing and I get rocks and dirt thrown at me all the time.

Wouldn't recommend stacking filters as light passing through too many layers of glass may increase chances of image quality degradation. On wide angle lenses, stacking filters may introduce vignetting as well.

I agree, if I did studio it wouldn't make much sense, but in sports or even the zoo, who knows what's going to fly at the lens.

Very good point. I didn't think of the wide lenses issues. My main lens is a 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM. I am looking at getting a couple of wides so that's a very good reminder.

I think the comment about too many layers can cause IQ loss makes the most amount of sense, but I'm cautious by nature and will keep a UV at least. CIP for the beach pictures. I just like the effect it has on the sky.
