Upgrading from S40

Hello All,

My wife and I want to buy a new camera and currently own the S40 Powershot. This camera was the hot p&s when we got it. We have been very happy with the camera over the years. Now trying to shoot indoors for kids shots, we often miss the action or it's too dark.

We have been reading the reviews and really like the SD950IS. Based on experience with the S40 would this be a good replacement?

What modes do you use the S40 in? The SD950 essentially only has the "Green Box" and other picture modes; if you use Tv, Av or M, you'll want an A590 or higher number model.

Hi Jon,

99% of the time the camera is used in auto mode for vacation shots. Some experimentation with other shooting modes on the wheel like B&W here and there. We don't use the TV, AV or M modes. Now we are taking more shots of kids and a lot indoors, and would like a little better indoor result.

Granted, I'm sure much can be attributed to lack of photography experience. When comparing to friends P&S cameras, they can just fire away in auto mode and get nice shots. Some are Canons and some are not. We like the Canon brand because the S40 has provided us with thousands of great shots.

Up until a week ago we were set on the G9, but that camera has more features than I can honestly say, I will never use. Size is a consideration too and the SD950 is small and compact. I hope this gives you an idea. Thanks for your time.

Well, they have improved response time in newer models; low light is still a problem, but the higher ISO ratings available will do better (but still not overwhelming in quality) at handling indoor shots. The sensor in the SD950's got about as large a pixel size as any Canon P&S out there now, so it'll generally be better than the rest as far as noise goes; you should have absolutely no problem with prints up to 5x7" and 8x10s or larger are certainly achievable if you need them.

I have the same problem with my S30/S40/S50 (yes, I've had them all). Auto mode is terrible for low light conditions. If you play with the ISO settings (400) and stick it in TV mode (1/20 shutter speed for handheld), you may get some extra life out of it. And whenever you head indoors, switch from Auto to TV mode and you'll have a decent shot.
