Would I get decent portrait results using a 430ex behind a diffuser umbrella and the 40D's onboard flash diffused?

I'd skip the onboard flash, but you can get some pretty good portraits with a single 430EX and a reflector.

my diffuser umbrella just showed up today... I'll probably order a reflector umbrella next....is that my best bet?

What umbrella? For a reflector, I simply mean a reflector, not a silver umbrella. You can even use some tin foil on a piece of cardboard for a ghetto reflector.
