I have 2 x 24-70 and a 24-105. I almost always take the 24-105 for my walk around lens. In fact, I'll probably bet getting rid of the others at some point because I rarely use them. My thing is that when I need a lens faster than f/4, its usually indoor sports, and usually f/2.8 is to slow... so I'm using a prime. The 24-70, in my humble opinion, has a very weird design. It is actually the longest when its at 24mm and the shortest at 70mm, and the hood doesn't move, so the lens protrudes out into the hood at 24mm making the hood work on both ends. I find this to be odd, and I prefer the standard way that the 24-105 zooms, which also lets it collapse a bit when you are at the wide end. But that has nothing to do with image quality, purely just personal preference with the design.

The way the 24-70 moves when zooming is better given how the hood is mounted. That allows the hood to provide better flare protection across the zoom range, it's deeper at 70mm like it needs to be and shallower at 24mm like it should be. On the 24-105 the hood is only fully effective at 24mm, which is what it is designed for.
