RC-1 and RC-5 Question

Hey guys,

There is a festival this weekend followed by a firework display and I'm trying to get ready for the occasion. My question is...I called Wolf Camera and they have an RC-5 for $29.00 and I called another camera store and they have an RC-1..the store with the RC-1 told me that the RC-5 is going to be discontinued and that the RC-5 is only for point and shoot cameras. Is this true? Is it worth the extra $5 to go with the RC-5.

I just saw this in a similar thread..it seems like the RC-1 has more features, so that makes me wonder why it's cheaper than the RC-5.

Nevermind..its wonders what a little searching can do ..I see that the RC-1 is more functional than the RC-5.

You can even strap it (the RC-1) to the original Canon neckstrap (or any other strap with a band of the same width as the Canon's) so that it's with in reach of the camera all the time.

I like the RC-1, though I wish it was a bit more powerful. It won't travel far in bright conditions but it's adequate.

The remote has three settings: immediate shutter release, a one or two second delay, and a longer time release (like using the regular timer mode).

It will als0 activate and deactivate Bulb -- which is awesome. I use mine all the time for time-lapse, as well as slow shutter shots using a tripod to prevent camera shake.

It's too bad Canon DSLRs don't have a sensor in the back of the body as well as the front....

B&H sells the RC-1 for $24.95. Can you Auto Focus with the RC-1? Does anyone know?

How does the AF work? Is it a separate button or does it like have a half press, and a full press button?

It's one button. I haven't really tried to half press it to see if it auto focuses, so I can't help you there and I don't have my camera with me to check. Sorry!

It's a single position push button switch so AF and exposure is done with one press of the button. If the camera is set so that AF is accomplished via the shutter release button (as opposed to using the "*" button), then auto focusing with the remote should not be a problem (assuming the AF point if over whatever subject you want to focus on) if you want the camera to focus first before taking a picture. But normally, if taking a group picture with you in it, you want to set the lens to MF and then focus manually to ensure that the whole group is in focus.

Darn. I might as well spend some dough one the separate af / shutter button remotes.

Canon has the LC-5 that lets you do just that. It's around US$400 (although you may need to hack the connector for it to work with your camera) .

Such a deal. $400 and the first thing you do is perform surgery on it to make it work. I'll bet everyone is rushing to the stores to get these.
