A quick studio flash/ ex flash shot comparison.

I have taken a couple of photos of my daughter. one with studio flash the other with on camera flash.

I thought it might be useful to show you can do studio type lighting with one flash. I know the shots arent exactly the same but I think they still

Im still learning lots myself so I not saying these are the best use of the lights or the best examples, just hopeing it will help others when thinking of lighting.

first shot with studio flash(dlite4) to camera right and reflector left.

2nd shot on camera 580ex pointing at a white sheet hung over a couple of chairs pointing 45degrees to subject.

While the lighting on these two images is certainly different, I think the biggest difference is the background. And that lighter colored background (and foreground) helped bounce more light into the shadow areas.

I agree that studio lighting is infinitely more versatile than on-camera flash, but your second image here also shows very nice lighting and demonstrates the results you can get when you use on-camera flash in creative ways.

By the way, she's a cutie!

Thanks curtis.

I think your totally right that the lighter background bounced more light around. but if I had used a 2 silver reflectors with the 580 I think I could have got some good results with the black background I dont think the white sheet was bouncing as much back as I could get. I think I will try that soon.

Im hoping that this will get a few people to try and do more with the equipment they have. I know myself that I always think I need more but I dont I just need to stop and think and use what I have wisely.

Nice shots, but I like the strobe more by a wide margin.
