The last time I posted I was schooled on not to use the Action Program but to use AV and AI Servo.

This shot was taken through the fence at high noon w/ 40d & 70-200 2.8L is.
f/2.8, iso 200, 1/3158s @ 100mm

uncropped

C&C wanted. Thanks in advance.

If you just learned to take the camera out of an auto mode, then this is a huge step up.

This is sharp, exposed well, has a decently lit face and includes a good expression / fair action.

About the only thing I suggest is that if you have a longer focal length available, shoot this in portrait orientation and much tighter. All that real estate on either side of the pitcher adds nothing.

looks good, horizon could be tweaked slightly. I possibly
would have shot portrait and zoomed in slightly but as is, it looks
like you got some nice IQ...

Crop it down and you've got a winner.

I think you are headed in the right direction. Move around a little more to get the 2nd baseman out of the way and you have a winner. I think you are in the right area, so keep checking your LCD and shoot another series from a slightly different angle.

Your hard work is paying off.

Does IQ go down w/ Cropping?

It depends. Extreme crops will reduce IQ, but there are a lot of factors. A higher MP camera will generally have higher IQ at tighter crops, and images with a higher ISO will look worse cropped. In this case, you shouldn't have a problem.

I echo the above comments. shooting that same shot in portrait and something closer to 150mm would have eliminated any need for cropping anyway though.

Thanks for all the tips. I will try next game in Portrait.

Is AI Servo the way to go or Manual Focus. I do wear glasses.

JPG vs. RAW - you will hear arguments for both. It really depends on what your needs are (RAW conversion does take longer than a JPG straight from the camera) and your storage as well (RAW files will require more storage - larger files). I personally have shot nothing but RAW for 2+ years now, and there are a few reasons why. It may just e me, but I think the color is better from a RAW file than a JPG because it is not compressed. I also like the fact that I can open a RAW file over and over and not lose anything (every time you open and save a JPG file it loses a little something due to compression). Also, for me I have been able to go back to older RAW files and produce better images from them after learning more about how to work with RAW files, as well as the improvements over time in software to process RAW files with. Again, it is personal preference - the bottom line is to get the exposure and composition right in camera so you do not have to manipulate the hell out of the file in post processing.

Looks legal to me. She just has to push off the rubber, not stay on it. The dirt flying up behind her back leg looks to be coming off of the edge of the rubber, which is legal (unless you're referring to something else).
