I got these at the March for Alternative in London on Saturday 26th March. The entire event passed off very peacefully, as expected, except for one or two instances of violence. I wasn't marching because of ill health but I got quite a few photos. As I turned a corner, suddenly out of nowhere came a mob of between 100 and 200 people moving down the road with about a dozen or so police following them. After a few minutes the mob turned and started walking towards the police, waving in their faces and shouting "Bye bye!" The police retreated.

There were quite a few photographers there, mostly press as far as I could see. They were running around trying to get a good position:

I tried to move back into the street I'd just turned out of but a man dressed in black ran out of the mob and started trying to smash the window of a bank. Others had already spray-painted slogans on the walls and windows:

One of the press photographers, suitably attired with a crash helmet, tried to get in closer for an action shot. I was even closer. Too close for comfort. It was time for me to get out of there:

The local newspaper got me in a picture from the wrestling tournament I shot yesterday

I'm sitting between the blue and green mats about center left.

And here's a photog I saw at the tournament.

I think you must have been at a different march from the media!

As far as the media is concerned, bad news is good news. ;)

True, but we've all seen the news broadcasts and the newspapers so, to say that it passed very peacefully is a bit of a stretch.

Ok, I'll clarify. The march passed very peacefully. But some thugs who were not part of the main event turned up just to attack the banks, the Ritz and other locations. There were over 200 arrests but 138 of those were people peacefully occupying Fortnum & Mason. The police seem not to have gone after the thugs:
http://www.independent.co.uk …uts-protests-2256729.html (external link)

Some news sites, including the Daily Mail, claimed that the violence came from UK Uncut members. The Daily Mail has been forced to recant. The BBC News is probably more correct in claiming that it stemmed from the Black Block, and the people I had a near miss with were definitely dressed black-bloc style.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_bloc (external link)

Here's a quote from Sky News: 'However, the majority of the demonstration - dubbed the "March for the Alternative" - was peaceful with organisers claiming up to 500,000 people had taken part.' http://news.sky.com …s/Article/201103115960442 (external link)

So, there were about 200 arrests out of "up to 500,000 people". Perhaps I shouldn't have said that "the entire event passed off very peacefully" but the March for the Alternative certainly did.

Interesting -- out here the talk has been about Libya, but at least in the snatches of news I've seen I didn't see this covered, but I guess it's not particularly surprising.
