Shooting with an external flash is common practice when the sun is bright and high in the sky. When used this way it's referred to as fill flash, and helps to eliminate Raccoon eyes which are caused by the harsh sun and shadows. The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

But not during streetphotography when you try to keep the size of your gear down to a minimum. Walking up with that monster to someone's face will only scare them away. | Lots of cheap camera gear |

Use it frequently myself. The problem is not the use of flahs, but the use of sto-fen during day time fill.
