Fill Flash in daylight is perfectly normal...

Use it frequently myself.

Shooting with an external flash is common practice when the sun is bright and high in the sky. When used this way it's referred to as fill flash, and helps to eliminate Raccoon eyes which are caused by the harsh sun and shadows. ;)
Edit; Had I scrolled down one more post, I would have seen that Jay has already explained this.

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

Yes i'm aware of the advantages of using fillflash during daylight photography, i do that myself. But not during streetphotography when you try to keep the size of your gear down to a minimum. Walking up with that monster to someone's face will only scare them away.

I bet they get cool shots, but that looks like it could be dangerous.

Taken down at Montreal Airport yesterday for the Air France A380! I took these with my friend's (first shot) 100-400L.

Canon 40D + 70-200 f/2.8L and 2x TC

Can we see your best shot of that A380? :)

The problem is not the use of flahs, but the use of sto-fen during day time fill. It is nothing but waste of flash power and likely reduce the effectiveness of the fill.

That shows why some surf shots are "amazing" and why some are "cool"...those of us who park on the pier can get away with "cool", but...
