I was shooting the Cross Town Classic in Chicago today which is the Chicago Cubs against the Chicago White Sox. I was shooting the pre-game warmups and Mark DeRosa at second base. I cranked off a few frames and couldn't believe my eyes when I looked at them, a white streak down the middle. I knew immediately what was wrong, blown shutter! I'll send it to CPS on Monday to find out what the damage is. I had a second body with me so I still shot the game. If you shoot professionally make sure you carry a second body with you.

Last good frame.

Yikes! Can I ask if you know what frame count you had on your camera when this happened and if you know if it was higher or lower than the rating that they give for the shutter on that camera?

It's a moving part, will have to fail eventually.

It's a 1DMKIIN and it blew 59,860 actuations, which is WAY below what that shutter is rated for.

AAAgogo - The shutter is a mechanical device and like anything mechanical they can fail.

Every picture you take your camera is one click closer to death.

Aack! Thanks for the heads up, I would have had no idea either what that white streak was.

Please let us know what iut costs to repair, I'd be interested to know.

Chris - I had one blow in April at around the same number of clicks. Pays to be a CPS member though - sent it to them via FedEx on a Monday, had it back by that Friday.

That white streak on those images is about the ONLY streak DeRosa has been a part of recently - certainly not a HITTING streak.

My condolences on your shutter. FWIW, my first shutter on my MkIIn (I'm on my third) went out at only 29,000 actuation. My third now has around 150,000.

Well, for that matter, every breath you take brings YOU one breath closer to death, if you want to be a fatalist, Chris.

If you have to pay for it, the cost to fix a shutter on a MkIIn is about $250. While they are not obligated to fix shutters outside of warranty, with CPS's help, I haven't had to pay for either of my repairs.

Here's more on CPS. Unfortunately, the US version is really behind the times, and don't have a Web site yet, AFAIK. CPS is for professional photographers, and they normally require a series of credentials, assignment sheets, tear sheets and also ownership of a minimum of Canon 'pro' gear ( 2 Professional SLR bodies and 3 L-series lenses, though when I applied, they didn't ask for proof of this - now I think they are asking for serial numbers)

I hope I long outlive my cameras. See you tomorrow at the MLS game.
