The 450D is the more advanced camera. However, it depends on your budget as to which may be right for you.

The more digits in the number, the lower the place the SLR fits in the EOS line.

So the 1000D is being released as a stripper model below the XXXD (Rebel) cameras, probably to compete with other <$500 bodies on the market like the Nikon D40. For new buyers who are unfamiliar with SLR systems and features, something as small as $50 difference will make their decision.

Few shoppers in the $500 range are weighing the advantages of Canon's f/4 L zooms or trying to decide between Nikon's 200-400/4 VR and Canon's more affordable supertele primes. They just think "Hey, the D40 is $50 cheaper than the XTi, so that's what I'll get".

In any case, 1D > 5D > XXD > XXXD > XXXXD

The question you really need to ask is what your looking to get out of the camera? The quality of the image is going to be nearly identical.
Is 10mp enough or do you need 12? If you doing a lot of printing A3 and larger, the 12 may help.
Is 7 point focusing enough or do you need 9? Shooting lots of action and fast moving targets then the extra 2 may help.
Is a 2 1/2 inch LCD ok or do you need the extra 1/2 inch? The resolution is the same so it's just the size alone. If you have bad eyes, it might help.
Is 3 frame per second enough or do you need the extra 1/2 frame?
Do you need spot metering or is partial enough? To some, spot is everything.

So pick the one that suites you needs the best. Both will deliver grteat pics so it's the features your looking at.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Between just those two I'd go for the 1000D just because of it's substantial price difference and not so substantial drop in features. I know I didn't like hearing people telling me to save up a bit more but I get it now so I'll say it, if I were you I'd save up just a bit more over the XSi and get the 40D. I say this because it doesn't cost all that much than the XSi and is a heckuva lot more camera(both in substance and features). I guess if it were me it'd be 1000D + glass or 40D.

doesnt the 1000D run on AA batteries? that would be a big enough turn off for me... the NBL2 batteries for the 350D/400D/450D last forever on a charge and AA are a hassle in my opinion

yeah that would indeed be a big turnoff wouldn't it? :) except of course that it doesn't . it uses the same battery and BG as the 450D. ;)

NEITHER ONE - GET A REFURB 30D

IMO, the absolute best buy out there in DSLR-land is a refurbished Canon 30D from Adorama for $640 with free shipping.

http://www.adorama.com …furbished%2030D&item_no=1 (external link)

The 30D beats the pants off the Rebel Series cameras in both controls and function and is certainly superior to the 1000D. It is a semi-pro camera which could easily function in a professional capacity. While you "could" use the Rebel Series professionally, you would be better off with the xxxD series of cameras.

I am not going to list the many advantages of the 30D over the Rebel Series in general but, peruse this link for the solid advantages.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com …l-SLR-Camera-Reviews.aspx (external link)

Regarding the purchase of a refurbished camera:

I have purchased four Canon DSLR's 10D, 350D, 30D, and 40D. I purchased the 10D, 350D and 40D new and needed to send each in for service within the fist 90 days. I purchased the 30D as a refurbished camera and it has worked flawlessly for over a year. By the way, the 10D and 350D have also worked flawlessly since they visited the Canon Service Center in Irvine and I am expecting the same results from the 40D when it arrives back (Irvine usually takes a week from receiving the camera to arrival back at my house).

Obviously, the quality control of the Service Center is superior to that of the assembly line. The only reason that I purchased a new 40D rather than a refurbished one is that after the $50 rebate for rebel camera owners on top of the $200 instant rebate - the new 40D was less expensive than a refurbished model. I would rather spend less for a new camera and send it back for service than to buy a refurbished camera which actually costs more than the refurb model.

The refurb 30D is not much more expensive than a new 1000D and is actually less expensive than a new 450D.

So the 1000D is being released as a stripper model below the XXXD (Rebel) cameras...

Interesting. So I guess Canon is REALLY targeting a specific audience with this "Stripper" model. I wonder if they'll release a redneck model this fall in Woodland or Mossy Oak Break-up, be just in time for deer season ya know!:lol::lol:

Back on topic, I think this is a smart move for Canon. Hopefully they'll sell train-loads of these stripper models, which could further support more R&D on more advanced bodies and lenses.

It's SD memory too. Lots of P&S people have SD cards already.

I just bought a 40D and returned it within a week (I did put about 200 - 400 shots on it).

My first impression was - wow, that's one beast of a camera.

After using it extensively for a week and then picking up my old XTi my first impression was - wow, that's some relief... and it's $700 less... and it takes pictures of the same quality using same lenses.

I guess the moral is - and that's what I learned the hard way - all things being somewhat equal, get a cheaper body (not the cheapest) and decent lenses and shoot away. Coming to think of it that's the advice that I keep reading on this forum and only now I'm starting to realize just how true it is.

So, I suggest you get XSi (450D). Or XTi (400D). The new kit lens from what I hear is a very decent one. Or get the body and then you'd have $700 or so left over for lenses (vs 40D with a kit). This should get you some very good lenses. E.g. I swear by Tamron 17-50/2.8 - a very high quality sharp lens - and I just got a Canon 55-250 IS to complement it (still in shipment), these two lenses cover most of the usual range and combined cost just over $650. Add the XTi body for $520 and you have a very decent kit for what a 40D with a so-so 28-135 IS lens would go for. Get a Costco kit with 17-55 IS and 55-250 IS and it's some $200 cheaper still. UK prices will be different but I assume proportionally about the same. That's just my opinion, of course.
