I just got my copy...no time to test it for focus problem...I already know about the AF problem b4 I bought the lens and judging from the amount of AF problem on sigma...I wouldn't be surprise my copy have it to and since I'm not from USA sending my lens to sigma is a no no...I do however think I have the latest copy...my serial starts with 105xx

I only hope my lens is good...if not I'll just MA it on my 7d...any of you guys using the lens on MA...just wondering???

-10 here. My has a slight back focus issue. You should do a focus test so that you know how much MA you need.

Hello All,

I hope I'm posting this in the appropriate thread. I just received my copy of the Sigma and it seems really soft wide open. I'm not sure if it's a dud or if I'm just expecting too much from a 1.4 lens. Once past 2.8, it seems to sharpen up nicely, but so does my 50 1.8. All testing was done on a tripod using a shutter release, manual focus, and 10x live view magnification. Shot using RAW and no post processing was done. Focus point was on "DK" in Redken.

since you're using mf...I think that's normal...but I could be wrong...

I'm weird - I love my 5D Mark II:D, Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS Mark II8-), Sigmalux 50mm 1.4, Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 + Manfrotto 804RC2, Gitzo GM3551 + Manfrotto 486RC2

I agree that my copy of the 1.8 is already quite sharp, so it's hard to improve much on it. I will take your advice and send it in since I feel it has slight front focus too. Thanks!

BTW, beautiful hospital shot!

Do a bokeh comparison with the 50 1.8 (the Sigma will smoke the Canon), then take some real life shots with the Siggy - you will then realize why you bought the Sigma.

In MFD? There's a bunch of info missing here. Also your focus plane with any lens will typically be biased towards the front a bit.

I love this lens. AF seems to be faster under AI Servo mode than under One Shot mode. My niece first birthday turning 1. All of these shots I had to turn down contrast from 2 to 1 or to 0. Sharpening at 5 the most in DPP.

Did a focus test...results are mix..need feedback from you guys...

here's the focus test pic...summary first...took a print screen so all three test can be compared at 100% crop... full version below. All test done on tripod, wide open f1.4, 10 second delay and no flash, camera is 7d using spot AF, show in raw and converted in dpp with no additional special settings...

IMAGE: http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/4148/new2y.png

1. Live view-Manual Focus
magnify ten times and did manual focus...I was shock to find that the manual focus test is the most focus to my eye...however upon further inspection I notice a bizarre green tint...could be due to my UV filter, the lens itself, the artificial light or some other factor...because of this I think it is not really in focus when compared to my other two test where the green tint is not present on both Contrast Detection and Phase detection mode...I could be wrong....

2. LiveView-Contrast Detection Autofocus
pressing the shutter half way once the contrast detection is finish I took the shot...notice the brownish tint? the word appear less in focus though....

3. View Finder-Phase detection Autofocus
live view is off, look through the view finder half shutter press once focus is lock took the shot. I notice the black bar is the most uniform, no green/brown tint...but again the word appear less in focus....

Full Version...Large file!

2. LiveView-Contrast Detection Autofocus - http://img502.imageshack.us …veviewcontrastdetecti.jpg (external link)
3. View Finder-Phase detection Autofocus - http://img294.imageshack.us …ewfinderphasedetectio.jpg (external link)

I don't know what to make of these test result...any idea guys...

but I'm quit happy with the pic took wide open f1.4 not bad...here's an example, spot af handheld...

100% crop

I know some of you might say its soft but wide open the lens is soft just not as soft as the canon version as illustrated by the many reviews of this lens on the net...

Looking forward to the feedback from you guys... thanks for your time!

I've never really looked at 7D files so it is tough to say but it looks pretty good to me. The green/purple fringing front to back is LOCA (longitudinal chromatic aberration) and is common to most fast lenses. Only very expensive (read: Leica) lenses labeled APO (for apo-chromatic) tend to reduce LOCA.

Looks like it's misfocusing. Isn't fringing a sign of misfocus? That's what I've noticed with my 'Lux when I was trying to MA before sending it in.

Not always. It's tough to call these images. My advice is try a flash on the eye of someone sitting still. Start at f/1.4 and work you way to f/2.8 in 1/3 stops. A flash is also helpful.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.
