I have spoken to my retailer and he has agreed to take back the Sigma (due to AF inconsistency) and to send me the Canon version. Here is the link to my ongoing findings: xgender.net

slug Member 150 posts Joined Dec 2006 Location: Edmonton More info | Not my best, but my best with the Sigma 50mm f1.4 as this is my first evening with it and are my first bunch of shots. I'd say nearly all the images had the AF dead on and any out of focus images were caused by movement out of the wide open aperture's miniscule DOF. I tested AF from half a metre to 30 feet or so. I also had the 30mm f1.4 and it was my favourite lens, but only sold it to go full frame and get the Sig 50. I've owned 3 Sigma lenses now that perform amazing and I would recommend their 50mm f1.4 to anyone. Neil - gear

stormyday Hatchling 9 posts Joined May 2007 More info | I'm late to this party, just got a Sigma 50mm 1.4 two days ago. I also ordered a couple of other Canon lenses. I spent the weekend testing and testing. The Sigma is sharp, actually better than the EF 17-40L I got. Wide open at f1.4 - 1.6 it's very sharp, but front focuses badly. At infinity (shooting at subjects 1+ mile away) for every 10 shots I take two are on the money and very nice. The rest focus about 150 meters in front of the camera. The copy I have beats both the EF 50mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4 at wide open sharpness. Gene

The dilemma for me is to send it back, or keep it hoping (risking) when I get a 5D Mark II I can adjust out the front focus with the microfocus settings. If it's frontfocusing that badly, it might be out enough that microadjustments won't be enough. I'd either exchange it or send it in for calibration.
