My experience is that, when the lens is wide open and focusing at something close, the image quality is disappointing. Note that my lens has been checked by Sigma twice within 7 months, and the technical guy personally gaurantees that it is up to Sigma's industrial standard.

Somewhat, but it's more for moving subjects. The AF on mine isn't so reliable at all for moving subjects and especially at very wide apertures I generally have a low keeper rate, but the bokeh is dreamy nice 17 and learning..
