Cool shot Kamilek. I could NOT handhold this lens at 1/60 on my crop camera!

Is it just me or is this lens terrible at trying to focus at something close?

My experience is that, when the lens is wide open and focusing at something close, the image quality is disappointing. Note that my lens has been checked by Sigma twice within 7 months, and the technical guy personally gaurantees that it is up to Sigma's industrial standard.

This is probably not a single incidence. Instead of blaming ourselves and doing some inaccurate experiments, which is to prove nothing, why don't we check out those online reviews based on experiments done by experts (example (external link))? See the MTF table as well as the discussion on longitudinal chromatic aberration. You will find that this is common among Sigma 50mm 1.4. To be fair, the same two problems can be found in Canon 50mm 1.4 and that could be even worse, especially the former one. After I learned this some weeks ago, I came to realize that, unless you have a Canon 50mm 1.2, you should not expect to get great image quality with a 50mm lens wide open AND with the subject close by. (Someone told me that even Zeiss 50mm is not as sharp as other Zeiss.) These two weaknesses together could really upset you. But you should not blame the lens. It's just too hard to do. Let's say a 1.2 lens should be used at 1.4 or 1.8 at most. A lens with MFD 17.7 inches should be used at more than, say, 24 inches. Then you can be as happy as many other Sigma 50mm fans.

Somewhat, but it's more for moving subjects. The AF on mine isn't so reliable at all for moving subjects and especially at very wide apertures I generally have a low keeper rate, but the bokeh is dreamy nice

Something a little different. Here are some abstract photos I did of a building down the street. It was pretty late and dark when I took these, but the reflections really made for great photos. I hope to return with a tripod one of these days, but these will do for now.
