I read the first 186 pages before I got tired of reading so I went down to my local dealer, played with it for some 15 minutes, and bought it.

I'm up to page 213 now but I think I'll stop and start shooting with it :)

Thanks a lot, everyone

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I did have to micro adjust mine a tiny bit, it front focused +5 or so. it's almost unnoticeable unless you pixel peek.

Thanks, Lantz. Seems like a super lens and already fun to use due to its size and weight (took it out while holiday shopping for some quick tests).

In the shop, it was hitting its focus mark whereever I pointed and the AF accuracy seemed really good. Once getting home, I did notice that it tends to front focus at close distances - from about 3' down to MFD but this might be me as I have yet to mount it on a tripod for a thorough test. I'm not too worried about it as this lens, I hope, will fill a specific role for me and I can calibrate it for that.

Will start contributing soon.

Question guys.

My Sigma 50 recently started "creeking" while focusing. It sounds like it needs to be lubricated. Any suggestions?

Mine did the exact same thing. Sent it to Sigma in NY and they calibrated it and lubed it. No charge to me.

Film, suckers.

Such a fun lens to use!

At f/2 it is really sharp. From f/2.8 it is incredibly sharp.

These two at f/1.4

My story (briefly):
-Upgraded from Canon 50mm f1.4 (no problems, just not satisfied) to Sigma 50.
-Sigma had slight focus issue (front focus close up, back focus far away), so I sent it in when I had time even though it wasn't too bad.
-Adjusted by C.R.I.S, but come back completely unusable.
-Sent lens back to Sigma this time for adjustment. Came back with same problem.
-Complained and Sigma sent me a new lens with smooth finish.
-Someone wanted to buy it, I wanted a Canon 50L and I had lost confidence in Sigma 50, so I sold it.
-Owned Canon 50mm f1.2 for a month. Canon also had focus problems (even after adjusted), and just wasn't THAT sharp even when focused. Compared pictures with previous Sigma 50 and realized that 1. Canon wasn't any better and even a little worse at times (although it had f1.2). 2. The focus didn't give me any more confidence than the Sigma. Realized I just couldn't justify cost if it wasn't that much better. Reordered Sigma 50 and decided that I would compare and keep the best one.
-Got a fresh Sigma 50 and it's amazing, right out of the box. Compared it side by side extensively with 50L before deciding to send 50L back. It wasn't a "Sigma is better for the money" decision. It was just better. The focus locked at times the 50L would mis-focus by a ton, and it focuses much faster (all 3 of my Sigma 50s have had very fast focus). The sharpness and contrast wide-open was better than the 50L. The blur is so smooth at f1.4 that it is very hard to see the difference between the Sigma at f1.4 vs Canon at f1.2. The colors are equal in my opinion. The Canon does have a special look (perhaps has something to do with the transition between DOF and blur), but so does the Sigma, and I wouldn't say that one has a "better" look than the other.

I am VERY happy with my 3rd (and FINAL) Sigma 50, and it's worth saving the money over the 50L. It was frustrating and a hassle, and initially convinced me to spend the money on the 50L because I wanted something trustworthy and hassle-free; but, when the 50L had issues too, it convinced me that it really doesn't have any advantage over the Sigma 50. I'm super-happy with my Sigma 50, it has been stuck on my camera since I got it, and in the end it gives me the performance that I hope that it (or the 50L) would have. It's worth the hassle to get a good one.

So I'm contributing something:
These aren't the best, they were all test shots but I was impressed by the sharpness. ALL at f1.4, straight out of camera.

I know how you feel....I did nearly the exact opposite. Went through 3 different 50L's over about 1.5 years only to end up with a perfect (old finish) Sigma, I've now shot that for the last year or two...I agree with your assesment of the differences (or) similarities with the L. It's a lens I wanted/tried to love.

The lens has been calibrated by Sigma couple of weeks ago and managed to test out the updated firmware yesterday. AI servo under living room lighting condition is about 95% spot on. I only missed focus with 4 shots over 120 I took. I love this lens even more....
