I just discovered that if you try to use the Sigma 50mm for objects/subjects over 3 metres away, the focus is off. Anyone else noticed that?

Mine is less than a month old and it seems to have near objects spot on in focussing. I thought nothing of it until someone asked me to try to focus on subjects in the distance.

However, I also discovered that for far off subjects, I can focus with live view very accurately though.

Just got mine the other day, but I have not noticed that. Mine needed a pretty big AF adjustment (+18-20), but things seem pretty solid at all distances so far. More testing to come, of course.

I posted the same thing a few pages back... except mine happens after infinity that the focus appears to be more off.

Thanks for the link and the original post. It was great to see that the difference between the two lenses are not all that wide apart in IQ - thankfully the sigma is less than half the cost of the L. But still, its not a perfect lens with its history of focussing issues and now discovering that it does not do well with subjects over 3m away.

Thanks again!

that's where the others are kept. The first set of rocks was over 3m away. I haven't even looked at them honestly, but you can do the same trick with getting the full res (swap out the folder name).

And people thought that getting the Sigma 50 fixed is a 'hassle'. Just wait till you get a 50L dud... you'll be in for a big surprise!

I just checked my lightroom gallery.. this season alone, I've shot 3286 pictures with the Sig50 vs. 1612 pictures with the 50L. When I have the chance, I'll put up a small Sig50 gallery on my site

With the 50L it's an "IF" (you get a dud) when you get the Sigma it's a "WHEN" (you get a dud). :p

I think Sigma have to fix so many they're just getting good at it.

J/K it's a good lens, just has it's QQ issues. :)

Thanks Ewan,
That was shot at f1.8, where I believe the bokeh looks the best, well, from 1.8 to 2.8...

I think I need to skip the temp purchase of the nifty and head straight for the Sigma - it looks like a cracking lens!
