I am new to flash photography & looking at purchasing a ST-E2 transmitter to fire both my 430Ex & 580EXII.

Now I have stands & shoot through umbrellas for both flashes but was wondering if I expanded to four flashes(another 2 430EX) the ST-E2 will have no problems firing four flashes?

There would be no limit, as long as the receivers can see the output of the St-E2, it will fire them. You are limited to the groups you can control of course but you can set your flashes to manual & control their output that way.

Depending upon your situation & the environment that you operate in, you may be better off with some form of radio trigger, either basic or if your sticking to Canon latter model stuff, the new Radio Poppers.

Off camera flash is so much fun & can also be very frustrating.

Cheers

Mark

there's a note on page 31 of the manual that says "there is no limit as to the number of slaves that can be used. Set the slave ID for all the slaves to either A or B"

see: http://www.bambos.co.uk/ST-E2_Manual.pdf (external link)

I've seen a ST-E2 fire half a dozen 580ex's so you should be fine...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I don't know if you know who Bob Davis is but...

if you click on inspiration then picture #35, you'll see an example of a ST-E2 triggering 5 flashes. I'm not a 100% sure it's a ST-E2 but I'm pretty sure it is (since he is a Canon light expert guy).
