A very good start! One suggestion though, I'd crop them tighter.

Thanks everyone for their comments. I went for a wlk around our main field yesterday and have found a couple of places that don't have a cluttered background. So I'll see what happens next game.

Also these images were stright from the camera, and were only resized. I have cropped them tigter and adjusted the horizons and they look great. A coulpe have been used in local papers by both teams.

I wish, our local papers are free comunity papers, and reckon they have no budget to buy photos. The clubs look after me though...freebies etc.

Then don't shoot for them! It isn't worth your valuable time just to get the photo credit. Contact them again, talk small to start w/ fees for freelancing (I'm assuming you don't work there). Even $50 a game is better than nothing.

Hey, welcome to the forum...

Congrats on the shots, very nice for a first time out.

I would just work on the images post shoot in some image editor. The colors are a little muddy. Not a big deal, but an area they can be improved. Also since your shooting a relatively short lens, you may want to work more down towards the goals where the action is tighter and you can keep it facing you. Just resist the temptation to shoot stuff too far away. Highly cropped images will always look a bit soft. Otherwise... your off to a good start. Cheers.

nice pics! newbie question for everyone...how would you get a more blurry background when he is already shooting at f2.8? i guess his lense goes to f2 but would that much make a difference?

Well, its not just a blurry(er) background that goes towards having a good background, but also the photographer choosing (if possible) a good location where the background is clean. Hope that helps :)
