Canon 550EX Flash

Yes, the 550EX is a decent flash. After all, it used to be Canon's top-of-the-line flash before the 580EX came along.

Sorry, can't help you with the pricing. I have a hard enough time managing dollars let alone pounds.

I bought 1 a couple of years ago for £150 and sold it a year ago for about the same. so if its in good condition i think thats a good price. its a great flash.

I've been using one for 8 or so years, it is a good flash. It's large though, and the interface can be a bit clumsy but it works quite well and is quite powerful. It supports ETTL-II and works just fine with newer camera, doing most of what the 580s do.

the 580 has a nice dial to change the setting the 550 has buttons which take longer to change the settings.

$250 is a bit high I think. I assume this is a used unit since they haven't been in production for some time. I think I paid $280 new for mine a couple of years ago.

A new 430EX is going for $240. It does what the 550EX does with the exception of some power and acting as a Master in a Master/Slave environment.

I actually think paying new 430ex money for a used 550ex is a good buy - it's about a stop more powerful which is a lot when you're using modifiers, and the master capability might well be needed later.

I'd pay £150, but no more.
