Today is the day I'm going to learn how to work my flash in manual. Can anyone reccomend a good website that can break things down for me?

One thing that I'm confused about is that when I put the flash into manual mode and set it on it's lowest setting (1/128th I think) and take a shot the flash is way way brighter than when I take the same shot in TTL mode with the FEV at zero. How do you get lower light from your flash in manual?

To make your flash appear dimmer in manual at the lowest setting you need to either move the flash away from the subject, lower your ISO or narrow your aperture. That is a very simplistic answer.

Excellent link; I have seen it before, but I ended up spending some time there today at your recommendation. I like the no light meter approach; not only because I do not own one, but it encourages me to experiment and go with what looks best.

Only problem is now I have more essentials to pick up "some system to get the flash off camera, a stand, and an umbrella.

I do recommend a light meter though, it makes things much easier.

You don't. 1/128 is the lowest it'll do in manual mode (short of using a ND filter, that is).

Well, I took a few shots of my wife after reading the 101 lessons; here is what I ended up with. I'm very happy with what I learned today. Thanks to both of you for putting me on the right path and clearing things up.
