Hi friends.
As I'm writing this, I'm preparing images for the Buy and Sell section of my current SLR kit. Unfortunately I have to part with all of it due to financial reasons
Anyway, As much as I do_not want to use a P&S, it's the only way I can continue shooting, so I started looking today. For whatever reason, I was thinking G9 or S5. Can you folks help me out with choosing an "as good as I can get" P&S (considering what I'm coming from)?
<sniffle>
I'd greatly appreciate it

Sorry to hear that, the G9 is a very nice camera, a little pricey but its built very well, image quality wont be a patch on what your used to, but what you do gain is something very small & easy to carry around, im sure you will appreciate that right away
I was thinking about getting the G9 a while back when I was looking for a P&S, I found lots of test shots on the net & while it was very good it didnt actually produce anymore quality than any of the other P&S cameras at that level.
I wanted RAW mode & a few other features, all what the G9 has, but I really didnt like the price, I did some more searching & found lots of people on here saying they have the Canon A720IS & that it was a perfect companion to go with their DSLR's.
SO...
I did some more searching, & found that it produced every bit as good images as the G9 & with the downloadable hack which is 100% safe & doesnt modify the camera in ANY way, it shoots in Raw mode too, I also liked the price, £120 vs £300 for the G9! quite a difference, zoom range is the same & I read someplace the A720 shares the same lens, not sure if this is correct or not.
In the end I just wanted something not too expensive but at the same time I wanted something very capable, I ended up getting the A720IS & its been great! sure its no match for my 5D but I dont expect it to be, image quality overall is excellent, great contrast & colour & its capable of picking up a LOT of detail, for macro shots I choose my A720IS over the 5D, it produces MUCH better results due to the larger DOF.
The main thing it lacks over the G9 is hotshoe mount & that nice G9 design, but im not fussed about the hotshoe as my Sigma flash has an optical sync mode, it fires when the little internal flash on the A720IS fires, I set the A720's flash to minimum so it has no effect on the scene & then use my Sigma, superb for indoor pics.
So there you have it
