I want to create a great portfolio that just blows people away when they see it and i need your help.

I would rather make a portfolio with actual prints instead of a website because i think it is more professional if done correctly.

I have so many questions i don't know where to start.

How big should my prints be in my portfolio?

How many prints?

What subject matter should I focus on if I want to do freelance?

How do I present myself as a serious photographer?

I am a college student with tough hours for the most part...big problem?

I want to get a job with a local penny saver or newspaper to start, do they need slightly inexperienced photographers like me? Is it worth the effort?

Should I wait until I am out of college to look for a real photography job?

What do I say when I walk in the office or call them?

Do I bring the portfolio with me or do I wait until we have a set interview time?

That's a lot of questions and I am sorry. You do not have to answer all of them but some would help.

POTN users have helped me a bunch in the past and now i rely on you once again.

Thanks in advance.

Well I can answer a few. You need both a printed one and a web based one. You will not be taken seriously and you will most likely get looked over is you do not have a website. For print size, I would say no bigger than 8x10, possibly 11x14. Anything bigger gets cumbersome to carry and to show. I would also say 10-12 of your best work.

Bring your portfolio everywhere. I have landed graphic design jobs on a spur of the moment interviews.

I have 2 Itoya portfolios (9x12 & 13x19).

I normally like to show off samples from the 13x19.

I've always leaned towards the bigger is better side.

I agree.
I have some that are 16X20", & some a bit bigger than that. I also have some mounted 4X5" transparencies. Do what works & don't push yourself into a corner by thinking the sizes have to all match.

It's offest by having access to the students & sporting events, which raises the question, "WHAT KIND OF PHOTOGRAPHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN DOING"?

I want to get a job with a local penny saver or newspaper to start, do they need slightly inexperienced photographers like me? Is it worth the effort?

How would we know? Ask.
