How did you get up there? I know roughly where that is - overlooking Clear Creek Canyon. I'm always down in the bottom trying to get a water picture.

Sorry for the late reply. This will sound funny, but I drove up there.

Take CO-40 to Lookout Mountain Road.

The link below should show you where I was- I use the GPS in the 7D2. You can see how to get up there. Great views of Denver, and the taller mountains looking the other way.

I knew some camera bodies have GPS built in to show you were a photo was taken at, but is it also somehow possible to view the GPS on the LCD screen to show you roads?

If that is possible it really does not sound that safe for driving practices.....

Didn't know you could get up there. I'll have to give it a try when we get a little snow on the peaks.

The camera doesn't have a roads database in it. However, I do bring my own GPS on business trips in the USA and Canada. It has a suction cup so it mounts on the windshield (until I gain some altitude in the mountains and the atmospheric pressure approaches the inside of the suction cup). My experience is that I'm a safer driver because I know when a turn is approaching so I can be in the correct lane in a timely fashion, and I remain part of a nice traffic flow. Newer GPS units will route you around traffic. It is wonderful after a long flight, during a dark and stormy night, to have a magic machine that gives you timely turn-by-turn instructions to a hotel you've never seen before. They will even tell you to turn by reference to a landmark, such as a business.

If I need to divert to another destination, I'll find a safe place to stop and program the diversion. I prefer a dedicated GPS to a phone map because the user interface is better, and it keeps working even if I lose data coverage (and it has happened to me many times). I will use the phone map, and other information, to verify the destination is correct on the GPS. I've seen occasional mistakes in the various databases, too. Such mistakes are rare, but they can waste a lot of time to straighten out and cause a lot of stress.

I had no idea the newer GPS units would route around traffic or turn by landmark. That sounds really nice! What unit do you own?

In the past I have bought Garmin, but the last Garmin I bought, after a year or so it totally stopped working. I kept it for a couple more years, but it never revived itself so I junked it this year.

I have a 4 year old Garmin. I was going to get a new one this year because the database updates are larger than the largest data card it will support. I'll put the old one into an older car without a moving-map. But I'll wait until I need to travel again before buying anything. I've been using Garmin from before they could hold maps. The old GPS V is relegated to being a bicycle computer. I'm sorry you got a bad one.

I have always had a camera nearby for most of my life but became a "late bloomer" into my 40's when I really got bitten by the photography bug. Weather has always been a passion of mine and I've spent many years as a Storm Tracker and media photographer. Auto Racing is also one of my great interests along with Amateur Radio and Firearms. Thanks for stopping by!

The one that quit working was the model 1450 which had I think a 6 inch screen. My oldest one still works but it just says Garmin Nuvi with no model number and much smaller screen. A year ago I rented a new vehicle for a short vacation trip, but the new vehicle did support the old GPS unit which did not work in the newer vehicle, still works in my 2008 Rav SUV. I had to use my phone GPS which is only 2 years old, but no fancy features.

Feel free to share. I have been a media storm tracker for years. You'd be surprised at the number of folks who don't pay attention to severe weather warnings. Thank you for your comment and have a great day!

My old one is a Nuvi, too. The vehicle should be independent of the GPS, but I only just use the 12 V outlet for electric power, not the Bluetooth or other stuff.

Same here, I also tried using the 12 V in the new rental but it was a no-go. The old Garmin works fine in my "older" Rav.
