I used the lower case 'ss' on purpose. It doesn't deserved to be in capitals.

What does the ss signify?? Is it the road, one of the buildings or something else??

I am guessing this is in another country different from the USA...

Charles this is a very ugly piece of history from WW2, where the SS (an elite group of murdering thugs) ravaged the innocent civilians of Europe.
In this case it was in France. If you need more then read this but it's hard to bear, so be warned

Oh yes, yes the ss of the German army. I did learn about that when I was in school a century ago.
