I started a thread here and I don't seem to be getting much input. I wondered if I should have went the other way and asked the SLR crowd who happen to own a P&S as well.

I'm selling the bulk of my things here. I can pick up a point and shoot. I wondered if you folks could help me pick one out since uh...well, if we're all SLR folks and you have a P&S you actually like, then I'm sure I'll like it too.

I think I'm leaning to a G9? Mods, don't get pissed that this post is in here - I just need a bit of help.

Thanks

I guess we could ask why, or what you are planning to shoot, or another long list of requirements. The G9 may end up being the "bridge" between P&S and DSLR. It isn't what you are selling, nor is it a disposable. It sounds like any P&S would really do. The G9 fits. My wife has ab SD900 that works - providing I get the exposure spot on (it does an admirable job) and don't mind a bit too much in-camera sharpening. I saw that there is a "load at boot" feature set that someone has developed for menu of the Canon P&S that will allow RAW out of the little cameras. I have not tried it, but plan to on my upcoming trip.

You're going to regret it I think. You can sell all of your lenses and get one ultra-zoom and still probably get better results than a P&S. I would wait and see how the new Canon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 lens looks when it comes out. It might be the solution you are looking for if you only want one lens. If you are looking for a smaller camera, then maybe the 1000D might work for you?

I tried a P&S personally (Canon A650 IS) and was too used to the quality and responsiveness of a DSLR and had to come back.

If you absolutely have to get one, I might look at the Fuji fs100s or Sony R1.

I don't really have an option for regret. I'm doing what I'm doing because I need to. My goal here is to still be able to shoot for around 400 bucks at the best image quality and function I can get. That's really where I'm at.

I'll work it out, thanks for the replies.

At that price, you can buy a used XT and the new 18-55IS lens.
If you're patient enough, you can probably get an XTi and the 18-55IS.
-or- you can get either of those with the 50mm 1.8 prime.
$400, and the only thing holding your images back from greatness will be the photographer. :)

Then again, a marvelous P&S is truly marvelous. If you can find one of the older s series (i.e. s70 or s80) on ebay, you will be thrilled.
I wouldn't get so hung up on RAW believe it or not. ACR can process jpgs as well, and there are MANY images where you would be very hard pressed to determine if they were originally captured as RAWs or jpgs by looking at them.

I only exist for your entertainment.

If I were in your shoes and cost was the main factor that is exactly what I would do (I'm just too enamored with the SLR "process"). Used XT + kit lens and 50 f/1.8 (if you can possibly swing it).

Well I can say from someone who converted recently from S2 to a 40D it is the best thing I have done. The only drawback is carrying the gear I have but it is little consequence to get a much better pic than what i was getting before. I am still learning and my pics are WAY better than with my P&S.

I don't think you guys are helping. He doesn't want to downgrade, but has to. What's the best option is the question.

I agree with another post about getting a downgraded body and keep one or two lenses if you can.

Nice, was gonna agree with the xt post, fairly cheap, reletively great IQ and you can grab a plastic fantastic for the low light action too.
But sounds like you're all set.
Cheers

I'm good with things now ;)
