The dynamic range of this scene must have been too much. There are several places where the highlights have no detail left, such as in the right hand, his shirt and some of the reflections in the window. At the same time the blacks are blocked up and clipped. This would have been a really great shot had there been a cloud pass over just long enough to make the light a bit more diffuse.

I see what you mean with some of the highlights and have done what I can now to correct them. I'm not sure what you mean for the blacks, could you give me an example?

Thanks!

Here is the histogram of your image from PSCS3.

It shows at the left margin the count of pixels that are solid black (value 0). Next to that is the count of those with value of 1, etc.

Clearly, there are many pixels that are solid black, which will show no gradations or texture in those shadows.

Generally speaking, the image should not have any pixels at level zero.

Bob gives awesome technical advice and everyone can benefit from it. I do think in some cases however (and i'm sure you'd agree Bob!) it's important to look at photography as not always needing to be bound by rules. Some of the best are those who break them, and I think you've captured a moment in time in a beautifully candid shot. I love the desaturated look and the fact that lack of other detail brings out the man's face. Very nice :) The only thing I might do is a very slight vertical crop to reduce the space above his head as I don't think it adds to the shot. Nik.

I most certainly agree with thebeatnut.
It has always been too easy for me to get so wrapped up in the technical issues that I can be very forgetful to complete the critique with some positive reenforcement of the aesthetics of the image.

I generally prefer "people" pictures, and this one is a keeper.

In this case impact wins over technical perfection..
