Approaching a Photographer for intern/2nd shooting

Hello,

I would like to start working with a photographer to learn as much as I can. I have a question on how to approach them. I am very interested and dedicated learning as much as I can and getting into the business. I currently have a list of wedding photographers that I would like to contact. My question is, how do I go about that? My portfolio is very small, and most likely not that great.

So how do I do it? I plan on soliciting them with an email. Do I include my gear? Samples of some of my shots?

Any help would be great!
