Hello all!

I am taking my 40d to the beach in a few weeks for a friend's 30th birthday. I'd like to take photos while I'm there, but I know I won't be walking around with it on my neck constantly. Does anyone have recommendations on how to protect my camera from beach sand? I have a camera armor on it, but it's definitely not sand proof, and probably isn't the best solution. Thanks!

Besides an underwater housing, there's not really much you can do besides the obvious.

1. Keeping the camera on you or in a well closed bag.
2. A really large ziplock bag to put the camera inside while not in use.
3. Take a P&S.

I would recomend a canon G9 or a AW bag and make sure to close the flap :)

OP has already (justifiably) ruled that out.

Just keep it in a good bag when not in use. I just spent 3 days at the beach with all my gear (2 bodies, 4 lenses, and a flash) with no problems (for the 3rd straight year). Clean it up when you leave and you will be fine.

DO NOT TAKE IT TO THE BEACH. We vacation in Siesta Key every year and the beaches there have that beautiful fine white sand - it's soft and silky and cool even on the hottest days... and it gets into every little hole or crevice it can find and it sits there forever, acting like a very fine sand paper on moving parts (say, lenses). I found it out first year when I brought my film Rebel - I think I can still shake a grain or two of sand out of this thing, and it's been a few years. I learned my lesson and I will only take a P&S with me.

How about an Aquapac underwater housing - think they are in the US $100 - $200 range (they are about £80 here in the UK).

There is a thread on here recently from a guy who went on a kayak / canoe trip with one if you do a search for Aquapac. The bags are ok to be put in the water / swim with and will keep your camera 100% dry if the bag is closed / sealed properly, but they are not suitable to dive properly with.

Hope that helps.

Aquapac

Thats the brand I was thinking about, couldn't remember so I posted a ebay facsimile (on my 1st post).

You could still take shots , but I'm pretty sure IQ would be affected (plastic <> optical grade glass) and handling (menus/controls/overall/looking through viewfinder/etc) would suffer.

Of course, there is another option (others have recommended as well) : http://www.olympusamerica.com …ection/cpg_digital_sw.asp (external link) - cheaper than a pro-level UW housing

I'll take my chances. The photos I get with my camera are worth more than the repair cost!

Best accessory? "Common sense."

Use your camera and enjoy it! Do try to keep it away from the sand:

- When using it, keep it around your neck - don't put it down on a towel
- When not using it, put it in your camera bag (close it up always)
- Keep the lens cap on when not shooting
- Do not change lenses if possible, otherwise shield it from wind and move quickly
- Maybe wipe it all down with a slightly damp rag when you get home
