I currently have a Sigma 530 DG ST, and have been very happy with it for the money.

I'd like to start shooting with at least one flash off camera. I'd also like to retain TTL capability.

What is the best option? A 580EX and a 430EX? Does an ST-E2 and a couple of 430's make sense, or would I be better off just getting the 580EX instead, and not getting the ST-E2.

I'm not a pro shooter yet, so I'd like to keep cost down as much as possible. I'm also open to 3rd party triggers, although I do think keeping TTL would make my life a lot easier.

Any suggestions for a 2 flash off camera setup?

I would choose a 580EX over the ST-E2. The extra cost is worth it. The 580EX transmits farther than the ST-E2, it controls 3 groups instead of 2, and it can contribute light to your image.

Canon flashes are nice, but they aren't the best way to keep your costs down. A new 580EX II and 430EX from B&H will cost you $670.00.

For only $80 more, you could get 2 AB 400 strobes, 2 light stands, 2 umbrellas, and a radio transmitter and receiver.

I have the Canon flashes, but I knew going in that they were not the most affordable option.

Have a read of the post I just made in this thread, especially regarding wireless triggers.

If you want to retain ETTL then a 430/580 combo is good.

Thanks Tim. I'm thinking I should get the 580 and 430 and sell my Sigma.

Mark - I like the portability and versatility of the speedlites I think.
