First one from Saturday night inter-league play featuring the Nats and O's from Nationals Park in Washington. Second one from Atlantic Division game between the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and the Lancaster Barnstormers. C and C wanted. Canon 40D and Sigma 70-200 2.8. Nats policy for those interested is cameras are fine if lens is shorter than 8 inches. Above lens=exactly 8 inches.

#1 is from the wrong side of the batters box. Theres not anything special enough for it to afford to not have a face. Trying to draw attention to the teammates watching is a stretch since theyre dark and out of focus anyways.

#2 Is pretty much the same thing as #1. Theres just nothing there but distraction and a foul ball.

Dont take anything I said too personally. I critique a little more harshly than most around here.

To add to what Adam is saying your camera position makes it really tough to get good "face" shots of batters as they will almost always be looking down toward ball on contact and even after contact when they follow the ball with their eyes, you would not be at the right angle to get that either. Try and get a little further down the base lines and maybe a bit lower and then you can get good batter shots on their follow thrus or even sometimes with bat on ball. Here are some examples where I was pretty much just behind the first or third base bag to show what I mean (these are only 13 year olds but it illustrates the point):

Also, crop a bit more to lose the background and get focus on the batter. Also use f2.8 to blur background better and again better isolate your subject.

Cheers!

Chris
