I lived in New Mexico for 13 years. There are many places. As mentioned, Santa Fe and Taos are great. Also look into White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, Four Corners, Sandia Peak in Alb. The tram ride to the top is worth it alone. Battleship rock is great, it's in the Jiminez Mountains which is a great place to get Nature photographs. If you are looking for old Indian/Mexican street type photography you can go just north of the City to Bernalio. If you go in October you can see the Balloon Fiesta, one of the largest in the world. Billy the Kid's grave is East of Alb. You can go to Roswell and see the crash site (not worth it, $15 bucks to stare at an eroted piece of land). There really is so much there. I would also recomend Red River New Mexico which is north near the Colorado boarder. It's a beautiful town with a ski area that goes right up to the town. In the summer they have different things around and in the winter they have skiing of course, and it really is a comfortable, laid back beautiful town. There is also old indian ruins with writings on walls in caves, but the name escapes me at the moment.

Hope that helps.

To add...there are lots of old indian ruins. Acoma, Grand Quivera, Cliff Dwellings, Isleta and Taos to name a fee. Ruidoso down south is a great mountain town. Jemez mountains just north of Albuquerque for nature. In Albuquerque...Bio-park, Old Town, Old Train Yards (Terminator 4 is shooting there now) the Bosque (woodlands near Rio Grande) and old neon signs up and down Rt 66 (Central Ave). Lots of hiking trails on the Sandia Mountains. Tent Rocks north of Albuqeurque. Carlsbad Cavers.

It depends on the time of year...

In October, the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is great. Carlsbad Caverns and Acoma Pueblo are great any time of year. If you go there in late November through February or so - The Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge (south of Albuquerque) has amazing flights of thousands upon thousands of wildfowl.

There is a small mining village, Madrid, a bit northeast of Albquerque that is really photogenic.

Request a New Mexico Vacation Guide from the N.M. Tourism Department. They really have the nickname of that state right on "Land of Enchantment".

I don't have much to add... These are all great suggestions. Maybe some annual events: the Hatch Chile Festival, the Albuquerque Gay Pride Parade, The New Mexico State Fair, Christmas in Albuquerque's Old Town, the burning of the Zozobra in "Fanta Se". And no one mentioned White Sands.
