Not a dumb question at all - the plethora of brackets and their attachment gizmo's can be daunting .

I have a Tamrac strap attached to the lugs of my 5D, but I don't always keep the large part of the strap attached. I will typically use the "entire" strap when going bracket-less, hiking, streetshooting, etc. but will unclip THAT portion of it usually when doing wedding work. It just gets in the way.

In the shot below you can see the clip ends of the Tamrac, minus the larger portion of the (neck/shoulder) strap.

I DO have a handstrap attached to the right side of the camera though, which allows me to rest the camera/bracket/flash combo at my side, with security, between shots.

I have to agree. Sort of a dumb question but once you have the bracket on do you guys usually use a neck strap? I usually like shooting with a handstrap but it looks like once I put on the bracket that will not be possible anymore...

Now in this particular shot, you can see the handstrap I've kluged into the entire setup.

Are you currently using a QR system and, if so, what type? The use of the RRS brackets assumes that you have either a camera plate or L-plate that is compatible with the Arca-Swiss QR system.

I'm not currently using a QR system. Yes, it looks like the RRS brackets needs me to buy an additional mounting plate of some sort. They have 2 on their site for the 5D (without grip). One is $55 and the L-plate is $140. Would it be smarter if I buy it from another company?

Kirk also has the camera plate and the L-plate and I think they're priced similarly to the RRS and seem to be just as good. There are other companies that sell the generic "fit all" plates but I'm not sure how well they resist twisting.

I ended up just buying the regular plate for now. My main usage is for the bracket is handheld shooting in bars/clubs/parties so I think the L plate is a little overkill. Thanks!

Maybe it's a little too late for this now but I was going to suggest going with the RRS camera plate because it has an anchor where you can attach your wrist strap. This way, you won't need to attach it to tripod screw hole which will make either the plate or the strap useless when used for the other function.

I bought the regular plate from RRS. There were basically only 2 choices. The regular plate and the L plate. I'll double check to see if it has an anchor.

Then that's good. :)
