What if Canon released a new firmware for the 5D. Which adds 5fps, UDMA and faster AF. Would you still want a 5D MII? Would the D700 still look inviting?

I don't need 5 fps. I would say unless you shoot sports neither do you. Train your eye to one good frame instead of trying to shoot your way thru it.

It has to be DIGIC III to run such a firmware, I believe..

Ha! Are you joking! Are you sure that non-sports shooters don't need this. Lets give an example for you to think about. Why do many wedding photographer have the 1DMII? One advantage is that using it a 6fps and under certain circumstances taking multi-shot you will overcome the blink problem. That's right you can get the shot, but someone has there eyes closed, it happens so fast. But if you got 2 or three. One will do better than the first. Just a thought.

having owned the 5d and now the 1d mark III i gotta tell you the 14-bit color will seal the deal on the upgrade.

i think the potential is there for a new IQ champ.

of course improved AF and a faster frame rate will make the camera much more versatile too.

X2 Ed. Well said.

I have the MK3 and the 5D so I have the best of both worlds. People poo-poo FPS all the time and it just doesn't make any sense. Until you have it, you have no idea what a difference it can make in nearly all forms of photography. Wedding, motorsports, any sports and even everyday shooting. Alot can happen in a tenth of a second.

No, not to spray and pray every single instance, but with fast action stuff and that once-in-a-lifetime wedding event, FPS is a very, very useful tool. To not use FPS, and run around claiming that timing the shot makes you a better photographer is as foolish as trying to build a house with a screwdriver.

FPS is an awesome tool. Yes, like anything, it can be overdone, but when used properly, will get you The Shot nearly every time.

Just an observation, but being as the current 5D is one of the most popular wedding bodies out there, I would say that higher fps might be "nice" but surely not necessary. There are only a few instances in a wedding where more fps would be an advantage, otherwise you are going to sound like the Paparazzi out there.

D700 will look inviting when it starts taking Canon lens.

Otherwise, no thanks, I will wait for the 5DmkII.

I can only hope 5DmkII price is around that of D700, but am afraid it will be higher :(

I shoot lots of sports and wildlife. I seldom use anything other than single frame rate. So a 5D would be fine (heck I managed with film cameras that didn't have winders).

There is a time and place to use a higher frame rate. But I think some people use it as a crutch to prop up their abilities. If they enjoy all those hours sitting in front of the computer editing, that's fine for them. It's just not for me.

As it is now, I'll often have 750 to 2000 photos to edit at the end of a full day. If I used higher frame rates, I'd have 3X to 5X as much to edit.

One time I do use a high frame rate is when I'm caught without a tripod or other means of steading the camera, but need to make a close-up shot or use a slow shutter speed. Switch to 5 or 6 fps and fire away. Chances are one of the frames will be sharp.

yes, haven't found a real purpose for it either. it was fun for the first couple of months or so after getting the 20D. 5fps was rather impressive back than and noobs (i was one too :) ) just love to show off their toys. since then i have only used fast drive only once in almost 3 and a half years.
But then again I'm the kind that enjoys the challenge and process itself so I'm biased to simple no-nonsense gear (prime lover - go figure :) ). I adore simplicity :)

....

I have a 40D and a 5D. Its not just that the 5D is slower in terms of fps, its just so much less responsive overall. I shot my nieces running around the other day and I simply got more keepers with the 40D.
