Not sure if it's the right forum, but I see so many baby pictures here and decide to ask. Anyone knows if using flash will have any effects on baby's eyes? Are they more sensitive to flash?

Hi, JoNa, I moved this thread to Talk About Photography because you didn't post any photos to share. Just to let you know how this works. You will probably get more responses here.

I take baby pictures and I do not use a flash for a newborn, try natural light, or I will use diffused light through a softbox or white umbrella or reflector. That's why newborn pictures are problematic. Sometimes you can't avoid flash, but not directly into baby's eyes.

Thanks Suzie for both - the answer and moving to the right forum.

when our son was born I only had the 20D with built-in flash & 50mm f/1.8
The nursing staff asked why I wasn't using flash & said there's normally no reason not to.
I've since upgraded to 50mm f/1.2 for the upcoming #2 in November... :-)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

hot lights, babies are very sensitive, especially the bright popping strobes in their eyes...

how about bouncing light or diffused bouncing light using stofen?

When i had my first born i didn't have DSLR yet, even as he grow older and I have the DSLR i try not to use flash unless necessary. Now that I see some baby pictures with fill/bounced flash, I'm wondering if it's okay to use flash.

This is a frequently occurring topic and it has been answered by kids doctors (I am not one): No, if you use flash normally, it will not hurt babies eyes. You may want to avoid shooting in a way that unnecessarily increases flash light into their eyes, like don't shoot way stopped down or with a grey filter on you lens or with extremely low ISO.

Discovery is not accidental. We discover only when we make ourselves ready to receive and photographers seek discovery by mastering their craft. But it begins somewhere else. It begins with daisies, kids, awful scenes, falling in love, or growing old. It begins with that which matters to you. And it ends with visual statements that express what matters to you about these things. It is not sight the camera satisfies so thoroughly, but the mind. - Christian Molidor
