Just yesterday, I ordered the 55-250 IS lens. I think I will be using it outside, primarily, so most likely Il need a hood and a CPL filter.

I already have a 67mm CPL filter for my other lens, and the step up rings are much cheaper than a new filter, so it seems like a no-brainer.

However, would a bigger filter on a step-up ring fit inside a hood ?

Also, what's a good place to shop for hoods ? Canon's prices seem pretty steep for a piece of plastic.

Thanks !

The 55-250 takes a 60 mm diameter (rear) hood. So I'd say no, it wouldn't. Many people, however, can't turn their polarizers because the hoods for those lenses are too deep. Maybe I have long fingers, but I find it possible with that hood and a 58 mm CPL.

How about the rubber hood from hvstar - would it allow use of a filter with a step-up ring ? I'll also email them directly & ask, they've been very helpful so far.

It screws into the filter threads so you'd need a 67 mm hood. But those generally don't provide as much shading of the lens (which is what a hood is supposed to do) as Canon's.

Not going to happen. The step-up ring has a larger diameter than the hood so it won't fit inside. I use a step-up ring, but have to go without the hood when I use it.

OK, so for an outside shot (e.g. landscape, bird, animal, small human monkeys playing in a park ;) ) what would I benefit from the most - a hood (supposedly better contrast) or a CPL (richer sky - good saturation).

I may just get both and see. The CPL adaptor is only $5 with shipping, and the hood is about as much. The idea of rubber hood to screw into 67 mm CPL seems interesting - how much worse is it than the plastic hood ? Anybody had any experience with these rubber ones ?

Yep - you're stuck. but a REALLY CHEAP option is to put the CP on, use a piece of cardboard and a rubber band to secure the cardboard to the lens. It doesn't have to go all the way around - the side opposite the light can be open. Pull it out until you start to detect vignetting in the viewfinder, and then slide it back 5-10 mm. Ugly as sin, but cheap and effective. It also stores flat. To dress it up a little, you can shoot it flat black - might also help optically a bit.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll try to do without the hood first.
