Getting Stills from a dvd, possible?

Hey.

Well someone just got in contact with me and asked me if i can make a wedding album from their dvd.

Basically the photographer messed them around and they don't have any shots from the wedding, only a really nice dvd.

Their 5th wedding anniversary is coming up and the husband wants me to make an album from stills that i extract from the dvd.

Firstly is it possible to get decent photos from it?

Secondly, how would i do it?

Decent photos, probably not at a resolution aprox 720x576.
Load DVD into PC and do screen grabs.
I'd have thought it would be breach of copyright to do this, but I suspect someone else will know...

what size photos is that approximately?, whats the largest they could be blown up?


na they've spoken to the videographer, he's ok with it.

Do you have written permission from the videographer?

Their work is also protected.

I'm no expert, but i'd do this..

Rip the DVD on to the hard disk using a ripping program. DVD Decrypter would do (Free)

Convert into an AVI file. WinAVI Video converter would do this (not free but free trial i think)

Then using a video editing program that has a stills grab functionality. Most do, even the windows movie maker that's bundled with windows might do it.

Then load in photoshop. Experiment with upscaling the image, see how big you can get away with interpolating the image.

VLC will play the DVD and you can do frame grabs. VLC is free and there is a portable version as well, no install. The caps are saved as png files. The biggest I have been able to print is 4x6 and these are marginal quality. For most people they are "good enough".

Make sure you get written permission from the videographer.

Find out what format was used to store the photos on the DVD. There are a few "photo Album" programs out there that use a proprietiary format that use their own viewer to display them. Not sure what'll happen if you try to "rip" that DVD. I think "Ripping" only works if the photos/video was stored as VOB files.

if the videoographer is ok with it see if he has the orignal non dvd compressed files
