I wanna start this post with a big ole' four-letter word of extreme versatility, yelled at the top of my lungs.

I was in NY tonight, leaving the venue I shoot for, running up 6th ave to catch my train, when about 20 blocks from the venue, I hear a battery fall out. Ok, now stick with me, but this is how my photobag is set up: a lowepro flipside 200, with a lens pouch on the side and up top, crucial to this anecdote, I attached a hoslter that holds a camera and lens. Usually, I'll take it off the bag and put it on my belt, use it to hold the camera or lens or whatever, then put it back on the top of the back, but the only way to attach it has it resting upside down. Now usually, I empty the holster before clipping it to the bag, but because I was rushing to make the train, I forgot that I had put stuff in the front pocket of the holster, which while I was running was facing upside down (even though the top was snapped shut, theres a space on the side)

So I traced and retraced my steps, all the to the venue and back, to no avail. It must've flown out of the bag and into a sewer, is my only guess. That or obviously someone found it. I had my name and phone number written on the back. My only prayer is that someone did find it, and they call me. Even if they keep the card I JUST WANT THE SHOTS BACK!!!!!!

Hopefully, you'll never have this happen to you. I went almost three years to the day since I got my first digital setup (July 7 2005) before I lost anything, save a single lens cap. I'm usually so aware of where my stuff is, but I dropped the CF ball on this one. So I hope that after reading this, you always always do a mental check, and always check your check. I failed to do that once, just once, and it cost me.

My 'system' whenever I shoot is to always have an empty card or two in my left front pants pocket, face up in their clear plastic holders that come with Sandisk cards and when I fill up a card I get an empty card out of the clear plastic holder and put the full one face down into the holder and the full one now goes into my right front pants pocket. I totally regard a card with images on it with a very high value and therefore always, always, always keep those on me at all times. They stay there until I dump the images onto the computer, which I do at the earliest possible moment I can, at which time I immediately burn two copies of every image to DVDs (and verify that they are on the disks).... and my Mac Pro also runs a backup automatically onto a second hard drive in the computer.

I could never let a shot card that is not backed up be not on my person. I even check my right front pocket frequently to make sure the expected number of cards are there as I go.

Interesting. I do the exact same thing except using the right>left system.
And even when I'm not shooting, there's an empty 1GB card in the left pocket 'cause I once left with a 128MB card I use for quickie studio shots.

That's why I love 16GB cards. Even shooting RAW files, I can shoot all day and the card never leaves the camera. It doesn't get ejected until I am safely home in the office.

I've heard folks caution about putting all of your eggs in one basket by using large CF cards, but I feel the chances of loss from exchanging cards is far greater.

We used to use an Epson P-2000 to download during a weekend shoot. We now have so many 2Gb. cards that it isn't necessary. We use several 4 card wallets and put our used (filled) CF units in the wallets upside down and backwards. CF cards are never reformatted until they are backed up on our external Harddrives.

I starting to agree with you. Had I had one 8-gb card and not two 4-gb cards, I'd have all my shots right now.

I agree with you, and for those people that say, your card might get corrupted, my answer, CF main card, SD backup. The LIKELY hood of BOTH cards failing at once is VERY SLIM.

I dropped a belt clip pouch with 6-8 cards in it once while crossing an off-road race track. Lucky for me another photographer noticed I dropped it and grabbed it for me.

I know have a larger pouch that velcro's to my belt. No more clips.

last week i started to look for my flash drive with pics on it. This was at work. Looked and looked cannot find it. A few days later I get a call from the operator desk that they have my flash drive. They looked at the photos on the drive and recognized me. Lucky me it was the right disk and not my "questionable" pics drive.
