I once had a small black film canister with boot polish in (saving space) when backpacking in Egypt and Israel. The Israeli guards freaked out about it when I was trying to get into the wailing wall - where they were searcing and x-raying everyone.

They were pretty suspicious until I dug some out and polished my boots.

Yeah, not really the kind of place to be carrying suspicious items...

Ah, they got over it...
And I had completely forgotten about it, totally made sense when we figured out what it was.

Have you got GNDs? With something like a Lee Foundation holder you can just stack a couple of GNDs... you can cover the entire lens with the dark portion and you get a lot more function out of having a couple of hard/soft GNDs that double as NDs than just straight NDs.

I'm using Lee GNDs and haven't noticed any IQ hit at all from having one - haven't tried stacking two yet, mind.. given the above choices, though, I think I'd spring for the Hoya so that you could get the most stops from only one piece of glass (if that wasn't overkill for what you were going for).

I've been considering getting a cokin type system because I see some real advantages with them, but they tend to be a little pricey.

What I want to do are extremely long daylight exposures of cityscapes etc so that I can remove all the moving cars/people/whatever and just get a very dead post-apocolyptic scene. Would also like to do some long waterfall/water exposures but it's generally dark enough around them to not need to drop too many stops.

Well if you go Cokin, and have an ultra-wide lens, get the Z-Pro system if there's any chance you think you might stack filters as the P series is a tad small if using a holder capable of holding more than one filter (the single slimline holder is fine though).

Cokin is also cheaper than Lee or Singh-Ray, but some people complain of colour casts with the Cokin filters.

Fair enough. I use RAW 100% of the time now so colour castes don't bother me.

So what's the difference between the P and Z? Is the Z really for medium format or larger lenses or something?

Same here, but it can be an issue with a GND as only the dark bit gets the colour cast, so correcting is a bit trickier.

Z is 4"x6" filters (same size as Lee and Singh-Ray), and thus you don't get vignetting from the filter holder on an ultra-wide lens. P series is smaller (ummm, don't have the measurements handy). As such, it's fine for most lenses until you get to the 10-20mm range (or 16mm on FF) with the multi-holder.

A lot of reviews say that the Lee system is better because it has moving bits made of brass rather than the plastic of the Cokin... I haven't used the Cokin but opted for the Lee based on the reviews and the fact that it wasn't a great deal more expensive. The holder was about $75, a step-up filter $22 and 3-stop/0.9/ND8 hard GND $95.

Weren't you supposed to be not buying anything? Or was it just not using anything new for Luke's thing? :p
