Looks like Nikon is really on the offensive - releasing the D700, which looks like a mini D3, with far superior AF to the 5D, full frame sensor, DX cropping a la D3, wider ISO range and superior high ISO performance (imho), weather sealing etc, better burst range, better shutter actuation numbers (lifespan) than the 5D and so on...

I wonder what the hell Canon is thinking? Come on Canon, get off your you know what and start matching (or preferably besting) Nikon.

Yeah, Canon was too far ahead for too long, now they have let Nikon catch up and perhaps even surpass. I wonder if they have anything that they have been sitting on till they needed it?

I don't think the question is for Canon, but for you. You are comapring a three year old camera, to an announced model, yet to be stocked on shelves.........what did you really expect, the Nikon wouldn't be "better"?

And how do you know Canon is just sitting around, not working on BETTER cameras, than what Nikon is currently putting out?

That's just the thing...Nikon is actually putting out cameras. Canon = "the sound of crickets chirping"

Sitting around and not releasing cameras is far different to releasing cameras. The 5D has been open to be trounced by Nikon for some time now, and they are doing that. True, the 5D is a 3 year old camera, but what sort of mentality is that from Canon to think that it would suffice? Canon has seemed to be very lazy in replacing it don't you think? You only have to look at the number of people saying that they will wait for the 5D mark II, that tells me the people, the consumers, Canon's customers, are not happy with the 5D, they think that Canon can, and should, do more with a new model.

My take is that Canon is simply not producing anymore 5Ds, and is trying to sell off old stock at normal prices to make a buck. The replacement model is ready to go, but they won't release it now because of negative affects on the 5D prices, thus affecting their profits.

I personally doubt that Canon's 5D Mark II will match the D700.

Canon still make fantastic cameras. The difference is that Nikon are now able to match them. Until 6 months ago that wasn't the case. I think we're seeing the actions of a company regaining market share as opposed to one used to being in the lead.

A great time for shooters of either make IMO.

Agreed, but it's not economical for me, plus I prefer the 1D series cameras feel in my hands, they just feel better size/shape wise.

Absolutely agreed. I can only think that Canon is doing a Nvidia/Intel - ambushing Nikon into false confidence, and then pouncing on them and destroying them. Well, at least I hope so, as that means that I win as a consumer.

Canon were behind Nikon at the breakup of the Kodak dominated D-SLR market.

Nikon entered an economic war with Kodak, both Nikon and Kodak were badly effected, Nikon was blasted into the dark ages and Kodak was almost obliterated off the face of the earth.

Canon, who did not enter the war, quietly copied everything and released their own first D-SLR which was at least twice as expensive as the Nikon models at the time.

Little did we know it then, but Canon had launched technologies that were 6 years ahead of everybody. The launch of their 1D has proven they were some 5 years ahead of the only competition left standing, Nikon did not actually catch up with the 1D until the D3 ~ and then passed it some way ahead of the brand new 1DMKIII.

So how have Canon lost those years of advantage?

I'm not sure that Canon or Nikon are able to destroy each other.

It's the likes of Olympus, Pentax and Fuji that are left to pick up the scraps IMO. The big two can carve the market up.

Just my opinion mind you but I see most of the 5D bashing and "I'm waiting for the 5DMkII" coming from people who's equipment list is noticeably lacking a 5D...

Those who do use one (myself included) still find it to be a completely effective and high-quality camera.

Well.., Canon owners definately are not lacking in the optimism department :)

Seriously.. come oon. The just are behind at the moment, and for some reason updated models are coming slowly, atleast in the "prosumer FF" cameras.

One half of "Prosumer" is CONsumer and I don't think the consumer market really cares if their camera is FF or Crop.

It's the PRO part of Prosumer that is driving the FF train and the PROs have a FF alternative in the 1DsMkIII. But I freely admit the 1Ds is a big pill to swallow...
