Any way to fix the auto focus on a kit lens?

My girlfriend dropped my camera with the kit lens on it last night and it seems as if when focusing, it clicks at mid point. Auto focus will not work properly because of this. Is there any way to fix this or is it pretty much junk? I am thinking of just buying a nifty fifty to replace it instead of the 18-55 again. Please let me know my options.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear that! Is she still your girlfriend? LOL...that was mean. I'm certain she feels bad about it.
Sounds to me like you have a manual focus lens now.
As for options that's something you'll have to decide. The nifty is a nice prime for the money but you lose the wide open range of the kit lens you had. I'm certain others will throw out some options for replacement for you but if that was your only lens it would sorta suck losing the range you had, however limited it was, by just getting a prime to replace it with.

Doubt it's fixable and if it is, it's probably not cost effective.

If you're in the UK you could buy mine off me - it's just sitting on my shelf collecting dust, unused for over a year but in perfect nick.

I agree with Doug that just a nifty alone could be a bit limiting.

Unfortunately I am not in the UK.

Can you guys/girls suggest some replacements? I would like to try to stay under $200 USD. I have an insurance program on my camera through best buy but I do not believe it covers the lens. I have a Sigma 75-300 but like you have stated above, I would like to have some more wide open range. I wanted to get a 50 originally but I was going to keep my 18-55 as well.

P.S. I mainly shoot motorsports subjects. For example this past weekend I was shooting some atv/dirtbike jumping and a couple weekends ago I was shooting motorcycle stunting. I would like a lens that can cover close up car photoshoots and possibly some landscapes as well.

How about looking for a used 18-55 in the US? Ther's likely to be plenty of good quality used copies available and pretty cheap, or maybe the 18-55is? I'm not familiar with US prices so I can't really help too much.

I would think the Best Buy warranty does cover the lens and camera..for one..they base it on the price of the item..$799 for the camera and lens and I don't know about $100-$150 less for the camera body only? (This is with my XTi) since the lens is included in that price (assuming you bought the kit) the lens should also be covered under that warranty. Try asking them ;)

On a side note..I am the worst fiance..I remove my battery from my XTi before leaving because of fear that she might be fiddling with it and drop it..

A hammer. ;)

Seriously, it's probably not worth fixing. Tell her you need that shiny new lens now.

Hah, I have told her that now she owes me a new lens. Problem is, she makes next to nothing after her bills so its not going to happen. I'm ok with buying a new lens because its a kit lens, I could use an upgrade. Now I just want to know what lens to buy.

Btw, I guess it could partially be my fault. I had the camera on a bench in my garage and she sat down and moved some stuff over and knocked my $80 sunglasses and my camera off the bench. Her birthday is next week and it looks like she is going to be receiving a new lens for my camera for her birthday.

True, but why not get the lens replaxed/fixed by the insurance you have with Best Buy and THEN sell it and make some extra cash. Just my .02.

Quite true, but I believe you can only replace the camera 2 or 3 times and I would rather wait until something more severe happens. If nothing ever happens, I will fix the lens towards the end of the warranty.

I THINK the replacement is actually only once. I was reading the form they gave me and I think it says it covers full replacement once. I'm not sure how many repairs it covers though..if it covers quite a few repairs than maybe getting the lens repaired isn't such a bad idea...if they say they need to replace it than just take it back? Now back to the lenses..have you thought about purchasing the IS verson of your kit lens? http://www.bhphotovideo.com …18_55mm_f_3_5_5_6_IS.html (external link)

If I was to purchase a new lens, I would want a different lens. I could probably get a replacement lens off ebay or maybe even here for cheap. I would like to replace it with a different lens though..

I've been looking through this thread and reading up on other lenses. I was looking to get a few quick hit suggestions and I would research those lenses.

I bought a Tokina 19-35 for cheap on Ebay and it turned out to be much better than the kit lens. Best $75.00 I ever spent.
