Is there any advantage of getting a 580 over a generic branded flash? I have the money for the 580 but if I could spread it a little farther.....

Canon flashes will all support E-TTL (II) which makes flash photography significantly easier for general use. A lot of the no-name will only support manual mode. I think the sigma flashes do support E-TTL though.

Some Metz, Quantum Qflashes, and I suppose a Sigma will do TTL, but it's still about features and power. Other than the Qflashes, which are very expensive the 580EX II has way more power than the others. The 580EX II also shoots in Manual and has a pc sync connection that the others (or a Canon 430 EX) have (at least I don't think they do). With out the pc connection it is very difficult to use the flash off camera, unless you want to use optical slaves, either a ST-E2 or a 580EX. So even though expensive the 580EX II is still the best choice - well anyway until Canon makes a unit comparable to the Nikon (sorry for using the N word) SB800 or the new SB900.

What? I use my 580EXs and Vivitar 285HVs off-camera all the time triggering with Pocket Wizards. None of my flashes have a PC connection.

How does the Metz 58 AF-1 compare to the 580EXII?
