Of the seven riders who participated in the test, Spies (in the first image on the blue Rizla+ Suzuki) was clearly the most dramatic rider, hanging further off his bike than anyone else. Fortunately, there was no fence in the way when it was time to get images of Spies.

Switched back and forth between modes 1 and 2 and didn't see much of a difference. :)

The Ducati image of Canepa was 1/800, best shutter speed for a bike coming straight at you. Others were 1/60-1/100. EXIF should be intact for the curious.

One photographer at the test had a 100-400mm IS and a 600mm prime, which will be useful for tightly-framed shots in much of the new IMS infield section.

The Ducati picture came from the new road course turn 2. The rest were from turn 6 (link to the course map). (external link) The rest of the course was off limits during the test, but those open locations may be the best for pictures when the race is held in September, depending on fencing.

Thank you so much for sharing. Excellent pictures and excellent info. I will be there in September.

Curious as to where you were on the track for pic 1?

Awesome panning shots. I didn't know the 70-300 was so gangsta, great job.

That image was taken at the inside of a corner which, for Formula One in 2007, was a right-hand bend leading to the south end of the road course. In 2008 for MotoGP, the corner is a left-hand bend leading to the infield section.

There was no fence in the way during the test, but that might change for the race in September. In any case, since MotoGP bikes are smaller than F1 cars, you'll need a very long lens for a closely framed image - the Spies image was around 225mm on a 1.6x crop camera.

The new southwest section of the infield course also is going to need really long lenses:

Ben Spies again, in the new turn two. That's the center 1500 pixels or so, cropped out of an original image that's 3888 pixels wide, and the lens was already set at its full 300mm extension.

Those who like panning shots also are going to enjoy the infield run from the new turn one to turn two, as long as they can handle the backlighting - since you'll always be facing south and into the sun.

If you like the kind of image you can get at the start of the race with a line of riders going through back and forth turns, some leaned left, others right and a few upright, look for a spot at the spectator mounds to the north of the new turns seven and eight.

It's uncertain what reversing the IMS road course is going to do to the best imaging spots at the northwest part of the course, which were the first turns for F1 and will be the final turns for MotoGP. The new turn 10 was a good spot for pictures, but bikes will be moving away from you with the reversed course. The same will be the case for the new turn 11, which once was a good place to watch F1 cars two abreast. The outside of the new turn 12 might be a good spot, depending on how far back you need to stand and the fence location - which could be much further back than the 2007 configuration.

Again, the race web site has a track map that will give you an idea of the view, (external link) but it doesn't show foot traffic restrictions, fences or distances to those fences. We'll have to wait a couple of months to learn that.

I'll have to spend a few bucks to be on hand for the show. :)
