Ok... so enough with the black and white retro stuff.... back to our regularly scheduled programming. In color!

Seeing both black and white and colour from the same event, makes me think each has its place. I love the garage shots in black and white, more then the panned shots. But thats just me.

It makes me think how many great shots were lost to black and white film in days gone by.

No, no, no... don't say that.

Go spend a half hour at Wheels On Walls (external link)

Look at the amazing stuff from Louis Klemantaski, Nigel Snowdon, Jesse Alexander or Tom Burnside. It's just incredible. Don't think of either or. Black and white is a medium... no different than discussing oil paint, or charcoal sketch.. or water color.. it's just another medium.

Oh I understand that it's just another medium, but I just think certain images are better suited to black and white, and some are better suited to color is all I was getting at.

I cut my teeth on shooting black and white at the age of 11, and nothing is as magical as watching a print come to life in the tray. But some images just lacked the pop that a colour slide of the same image would generate.

I'm not dismissing black and white at all, as with the right subject matter, it can generate a wonderful mood and feeling, that color just can't equal.

I find modern cars to look strange in black and white... I think the mind's eye is just accustomed to bright vivid colors. I do like black and white portraits, though.

I'm sure if photography had found its beginnings in color, black and white would be completely unacceptable. But, since it came first... and was pursued to an art forum, there is something magical about it, at least to me. Ansel Adams, Weston, etc. I find the work unbelievable. When you consider the "science of light," black and white has an unencumbered advantage. IMO.

Agree, the classic Mini in Gulf colors is a great shot.

I like the tennis balls in 8, those kind of quirky touches with the older cars really remind me of Pete Lyons, who did a lot of Can-Am.

The Mini is very nice too, through the trees is a very neat look, and I like the fact it isn't totally sharp, adds to energy, speed etc.

7 is the only one I'm not too keen on, the Marshall's obscure too much of the car, and they're not scenic like the trees.

EDIT: Just noticed Pete Lyons is on WheelsonWalls, just the kind of wonderful shots I remember from a book of his :)
