I am looking at to purchase this lens and would like any comments on the performance of the lens.

I will be shoot mostly trains and my kids playings around with it with the occasional sunrise/set when time permits.

Thanks,

Kevin

This is a kit lens from 40D, I believe. I just used it for a week or so, probably couple hundred shots.

I was initially impressed with it - very smooth bokeh and nice saturation. However, after a while it felt a bit soft and not wide enough, compared to my Tamron 17-50. It's also not very good in low light - IS helps but not when kids are on the move. Have you considered 18-55 IS (much cheaper but I believe of comparable IQ, you're just not paying as much for the reach), Tamron 17-50 /2.8 (about the same $, and no IS, excellent sharpness and IQ) or a comparable Sigma. All of these lenses are wider so better for landscapes. I think. Although I don't have much experience ;)

Ex-Canon shooter. Now Sony Nex.
