Start of with the sticky.
Then search POTN.

Most recommended is probably the Manfrotto 055 with 488RC2.
Some other options: Amvona, Slik, Velbon.

Best: Gitzo ($$$)

It's its smaller brother so to speak: A bit smaller, lighter, less sturdy and cheaper.

blary54,
I use the Manfrotto 3021b pro, its great for macro and other types of photography because its very strong. Can handle large weights and wind etc.... Center can be mounted reversed or to the side and legs can extend to flat (I use a 3030 pan tilt head). With macro I find unless you have a light box on a table you need strength to hold the weight steady with the awkward positions of macro in the field.

Of course hand held photos are still the most used ;)

My Manfrotto 3021 B PRO has a lot of options - a reversible center column, the column can be set at right angles to the normal column orientation, and the legs can open up to almost flat. Pretty flexible unit...

Im having trouble finding the 3021B It looks like that tripod has possibly been discontinued or renamed? Anyway I think that the 055 or 190x is what i'm leaning to. Just going to have a save a few bucks first.

If you want to use it for macro, I suggest getting a geared head. I've been shooting macro a lot lately, I'm getting a geared head. I don't like ballheads for macro, too damn hard to do little adjustments.

You might consider the Gitzo Explorer series such as the G2220 and 2530ex.

Good advice. And get a focusing rail.
